What image metadata can contain
An image file can hold information in addition to its visible pixels. Cameras and editing applications may store EXIF, XMP or IPTC fields describing the device, capture settings, creation time, software, copyright information and other details.
Some phones and cameras can record geographic coordinates. When those GPS fields remain in a shared file, they may reveal where the photograph was taken—even though no location appears visibly in the picture.

Inspect the actual file you plan to share
Metadata can change during an image's journey. A social network, messaging application or screenshot may remove some fields, while an original file exported from a phone can retain much more.
Check the exact JPG, PNG or WebP file you intend to send. Pay special attention to coordinates, location names, timestamps, camera identifiers and editing fields that could disclose more context than intended.
Create and verify a clean sharing copy
A reliable browser-side removal method decodes the visible image pixels and writes them into a newly encoded file. That clean copy does not intentionally carry the source file's listed EXIF, GPS, XMP or IPTC fields.
- Select the original image
Open the metadata viewer and review any fields it can identify, particularly location information.
- Choose the sharing format
JPG is practical for ordinary photos, PNG is useful for lossless graphics or transparency, and WebP can provide compact modern output.
- Create a clean copy
Re-encode the image in the browser so the visible pixels are saved without copying the reported metadata fields.
- Inspect the downloaded copy
Open it, confirm orientation and quality, then run the clean file through the viewer again before sharing sensitive material.

Metadata can be useful for organizing and editing your own collection, so removal is best treated as a sharing step.
Removing metadata does not remove visible clues
A metadata-free photo can still reveal a location through street signs, landmarks, reflections, mail, vehicle plates, badges or a view through a window. Faces and distinctive interiors can also identify people or places.
Crop or blur visible sensitive information when appropriate, and think about the audience and timing of the post. Metadata removal reduces one class of hidden information; it does not make every photograph anonymous.

Does every photo contain GPS coordinates?
No. Location recording may be disabled, the camera may not support it, or another application may already have removed the GPS fields.
Can metadata return after I remove it?
The removed source fields are not intentionally copied into the clean file. An application you use later could add new metadata, so inspect the final file you actually plan to share.
Should I delete the original photo?
Usually not. Keep the original privately if its date, camera information and full quality are useful; share the cleaned copy instead.
